The future of Newton Public Schools is at risk, and we need you to help it thrive.
The Newton Public Schools Budget Crisis
In consultation with principals and department heads, Superintendent Anna Nolin drafted a “Thrive” budget that would fully fund NPS and require a 9% funding increase to implement. However, Mayor Fuller has allocated only a 3.65% increase in funding, which would require meaningful cuts to current NPS operations.
With the Mayor’s current allocation, there will be reductions:
28.8 positions cut across NPS
Reduction of 15 elementary teachers
Cuts to late sports buses
No overnight field trip funding
No expansion MTSS
We urge you to click the button below to access the PTO Toolkit Resources PDF, which provides a detailed breakdown of the problem and Superintendent Anna Nolin’s proposals.
Steps you can take to help Newton Public Schools THRIVE:
Email or call your School Committee Members them to pass the Superintendent’s Proposed “Level Service Plus” Budget (the Yellow budget)
Learn about the NPS budget crisis & attend and watch school committee meetings.
Email or call Mayor Fuller and ask her to allocate an additional $3.7M to NPS for the Superintendent’s Proposed Budget.
Talk to your friends and neighbors, particularly those who don’t have students in NPS anymore, about the state of NPS. Get their support!
